Doulas

Doulas are women specially trained to give emotional and practical support during the pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal period.

A birth doula is present at the birth and during labour can offer help and guidance on comfort, relaxation and breathing.  A good doula will also advise the father on how best to support his partner and how to be involved in the birth (if he wants!) the doula will usually meet with the mother (or couple) at least once face-to-face.  Most birth doulas normally follow-up with at least one post-natal visit.

A postnatal doula is not present during birth but can also offer practical and emotional support to mum and dad after the baby is born, Typically she would help with newborn advice and guidance, cooking meals, shopping, helping with siblings.

It is important to be aware that doulas are not medically trained.  For more information on the role of a doula please visit www.doula.org.co.uk
